Featured: Heidi Elva - Ships & Trees (Vitamin) / Live In The Studio

Heidi Elva grew up in a small town in New Zealand, under mountain ranges. Now living in Sydney, the delicate conversation of her art is inspired by both nature and urban landscapes, silhouettes of houses and trees, the sound of birds and cars and the beauty of Japanese minimalism.
Heidi's debut album 'Ships & Trees' was recorded over six months in a tiny room in Newtown, Sydney. Under the light of a red lampshade, Heidi brought her ideas, field recordings, found sounds and poetry and played with friends who would come and go.
The result is astonishingly intimate and hauntingly fragile, at the same time a precarious lyrical balancing act of loss and hope and one of the most musically unique and tender recordings to have ever graced Sideways Through Sound.
Heidi will be joining Thee Sonic Assassin live in the studio on 29th September to talk about 'Ships & Trees', her plans for a very special album launch and Heidi promises to bring her harp to the 26th floor and play some songs for us. How lucky are we...!!!

Featured: Khancoban - Limbs May Fall (Half A Cow)
Half noise, half folk, Khancoban's songs deploy in low gravity with a dash of grit. They are performed calmly, using calculated space and tension, exploding at key points that leave the band's filament burning in their wake.
'Limbs May Fall' is Khancoban's first full length record, expanding in every direction from their 2006 debut and maintaining the sombre aura and hinterland textures of their sound, which ultimately beckon to a specific region.
In Khancoban, a banjo delivers, a lap steel's chords slink up behind you and the beat marches you through a new and curious sound-scape. Khancoban is an atmosphere soaked in spaghetti western country with a touch of psyche and all the while still leaving plenty of room to day-dream in...
Khancoban's 'Limbs May Fall' will be the featured album on next weeks Sideways Through Sound 22nd September 2008.

Featured: Mary Hampton - My Mothers Children (Navigator)

Mary Hampton has lived for some time in a room over looking the sea in Brighton, England.
While studying 20th century music at university, Mary heard her first traditional English folk song. Ever since then she has been rooting about in second hand bookshops trying to uncover more of these old songs and extract the essence of some of the sensibilities they articulate.
In the past two years, she has recorded two EPs, Book One (6 songs of refusal) and Book Two (6 songs of hunger), both of which contain various arrangements of the traditional songs Mary found.
Mary's first solo album, 'My Mother's Children' is a further distillation of Mary's musical influences, the subjects she covers are timeless and the language she uses, raw and poetic; the stories themselves frequently charged with gothic drama and mystery.
Sideways Through Sound is honoured to have Mary's new album featured on the next show: 15th September 2008...

Spotlight on Static Caravan Records
(or "Welcome to your new favourite label, Part 2 ")

So it looks like this 'spotlight on a label' trip might be a monthly adventure, until I run out of favourite labels that is...
Static Caravan are still undoubtedly one of the most artistically adventurous and sonically surprising labels around today!! With a roster that includes show favourites The Owl Service, Mesma, Ass, Men-An-Tol and The Accidental, alongside fellow Mancunian new folksters Starless And Bible Black and John Smith, plus laptop folk luminaries Tunng, Static Caravan have continued to quietly unearth and champion the leftfield since 1998.
Every Static Caravan release is a carefully considered piece of art, both aurally and visually, and this attention simply brings back the joy of ownership in a world increasingly content to have music as a faceless downloaded commodity.
There are 3" CD's, lathe cuts, etched 7"s, all manner of folded card CD cases, 10"s, coloured vinyl albums... you get the idea...
When you buy a Static Carvan record (or CD), you are not only supporting independent music but you are part of a much bigger picture. One where music remains something to be treasured, created with love and passion and commitment, to be adored and shared...
...and that's why Sideways Through Sound will be featuring the truly wonderful Static Carvan Records on the show next week, the 8th September 2008
Welcome To Your New Favourite Label!!

Featured: Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost (Light In The Attic)

The Black Angels formed in Austin, Texas in 2004 and released their debut album 'Passover' two years later. 'Directions To See A Ghost' continues to develop the central theme of mind expansion, in an attempt to understand the reality of this world and to ultimately progress beyond it.
They call it "hypno-drone 'n roll". It's the sound of long nights on peyote, of dreams of a new world order and of half invented memories of the seamy side of 60's psychedelia.
Sonically speaking, the Black Angels live in the garage strobe of mid 66, with the drilling guitars of early Velvet Underground, the raga inflections of Fillmore jams and the acid-prayer stomp of the 13th Floor Elevators.
But this is no pastiche brothers and sisters, come and see hear for yourselves. The Black Angels and Sideways Through Sound invite you to "Turn On, Tune In And Drone Out" with us on September 1st, where Directions To See A Ghost will be our featured album on the show.
