JL sleeve

Jeff Lang's Half Seas Over is an album which resonates with story and song. With his eloquent guitar and sweet voice, this powerful and hypnotic recording draws deeply on traditional folk sources. Jeff comfortably captures both the old, unsettling gothic tales and the simple and compelling sound of acoustic guitar to express the deeper resonances beneath the stories.

Jeff's original compositions, together with a couple of traditional folk songs, testify to the power of music and story, where the ordinary becomes a truly enchanted place. Where everyday and domestic tales reveal themselves with heroic dimensions and tragic consequences.

The song-writing mastery can be seen here in the smallest of details, arranged with the utmost simplicity alongside minimal accompaniment of a quiet intensity. Jeff Lang's Half Seas Over is a modern classic, boldly showing its influence yet magnificently towering above it's contemporaries.

This is quite simply one of the most exciting Australian folk albums Thee Sonic Assassin has had the pleasure of knowing and will be featured on the show 27th October 2008.

Featured: Heavy Water Experiments - S/T

HWE sleeve

Los Angeles' Heavy Water Experiments will defy and resist simply reviving the sounds of bygone eras. Admittedly influenced by 60's psychedelia and 70's progressive rock, H.W.E. is a group striving to break new ground, according to an avant-garde or art rock sensibility.

The H.W.E. sound swirls and slides between a dark, psychedelic rock and a mellow, acoustic vibe. Altamont heavy stoner grooves and edgy garage rock seeps through and, with a heavily effects laden 8-string bass often taking the lead, the songs twist and turn like the star act at Louie's Limbo Lounge.

I know! I was there...

Reluctantly leaving the flesh/flash of Go-Go lights behind, H.W.E. are a finely buzzed peyote trip to the desert, carreering around in their attack Dune Buggies, riding high to their hippy commune hide-out. Flat on their backs, bathed in star-light, this is the space-time continuum in over-drive from 1968 to tomorrow, back to now and back again.

Where are you? Tune in brothers and sisters. 20th October 2008

Spotlight on Preservation Records

(or "Welcome to your new favourite label, Part 3 ")p

Preservation is a label from Sydney, Australia, releasing sweet and exploratory sounds from across the music spectrum around the world.

tjo

With an impressive roster including albums from experimentalists Chris Townend and Oren Ambarchi (of Sunn O))), an overview of Australian experimental, electronica and sound-art (Motion: Movement in Australian Sound), ambient folk artist Tara Jane ONeil from Kentucky and the post-rock atmospherics of Saddleback from northern NSW. Phew...

They've also released albums by the experimental 12-string guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans from Germany, acid-tinged folk from Japan's Eddie Marcon, the pure songwriting genius of Melbourne's Grand Salvo and expansive electronica from Post, the multi-instrumentalist Aaron Martin from Kansas, projects featuring Charalabmbides' Tom Carter, and the exquisite acoustic ruminations of Scotland's Early Songs...

tc

They also love making the look of the CD that little bit special.... all their unique packaging is hand-crafted and designed in-house by Mark Gowing (www.markgowing.com).

Sideways Through Sound will be featuring a selection of tracks from the wonderful Preservation Records back catalogue on the show next week: 13th October.

Featured: Cian Nugent / v/a We Are All Circling The Stars

Cian

Cian Nugent is a young guitarist from Dublin, Ireland and in 2007 he released an EP of his highly original and intensely meditative guitar compositions. Recorded to an old reel-to-reel machine, Cian's playing on these tracks was deeply rooted in pre-war blues, Appalachian string bands and the Takoma tradition, his work well served by the crackly presentation, enjoyably reminiscent of a rummaged 78 rpm treasure.

The inclusion of 'When the Snow Melts and Floats Downstream' on Imaginational Anthem Volume 3 followed soon after and although John Fahey was still referenced , Cian proves himself to be no mere Fahey imitator. His music boasts a rare breadth, effectively using the style as a starting point for his compositions whilst creating something highly personal within these limitations.

As he prepares for his imminent Tompkins Square release, Cian has been seeking out a broader set of influences and a more orchestrated, fully instrumented sound. "The whole field of modern classical I'm finding really exciting, from the really extreme to the tame."

Cian is currently on tour in the U.S. and Childhood, Christian Lies and Slaughter will be featured on Sideways Through Sound 6th October 2008.

v/a - We Are All Circling The Stars (Cosmos)

WAACTS

Admittedly, I was a bit overwhelmed by this release, but eventually, months later, Thee Sonic Assassin has managed to distill a few favourites from this double-disc selection of underground folk jams.

Whilst showcasing an incredible wealth of fairly less than well-known talent, there are also superb tracks from Diane Cluck, Hush Arbors, Skygreen Leopards and King Creosote. Inevitably, these sorts of affairs tend to be a bit hit and miss, but this is thankfully not the case here at all.

Amongst Sideways Through Sound's high-lights are Booger Red, Mary Hampton and Sal Paradise but there are a number of pleasant surprises here too. There is simply too much good stuff to list, but there's plenty to get stuck into here for anyone who loves various strains of folk and '60s-style experimental pop music.

Sideways Through Sound will be playing a long overdue selection from We Are All Circling The Stars on the show 6th October 2008.
