Featured: oRLA wREN - The One Two Bird & The Half Horse (Flau)

oRLA wREN is Tui, who broke away from the trappings of the modern world (bank accounts and living in buildings), becoming a dreadlocked, lap-top wielding gypsy.
He lives with Rima in a self converted 1976 Bedford TK Horsebox, their itinerant lifestyle finds them sleeping in forests and travelling the length of their adopted Scotland. They sell multi media art work on the streets, whilst hand making various peculiar stringed things in readiness for continued oRLA wREN busking in the towns across Europe.
'The One Two Bird And The Half Horse' is the second album from oRLA wREN. Recorded over two years in an isolated, cold-water cottage in Scotland, it develops Tui’s happy obsession with rendering the minutiae of nature into sonic form. oRLA wREN combines the oldest, wonkiest most organic of possible sound sources, instrumental or otherwise and fashions them into textures of pinprick detail.
oRLA wREN's surfaces may be brilliantly modern, but it’s soul is ancient and gently unfolds itself in a contemplative manner, revealing the antiquated isolation of the environments that have inspired it. 'The One Two Bird & The Half Horse' distils sublime wood smoke folk atmosphere and pointallist digitalis to the subatomic level, until it becomes effectively the same stuff that makes brooks babble and winds whisper.
Sideways Through Sound will be playing a selection of tracks from oRLA wREN's 'The One Two Bird & The Half Horse' on next weeks show 27th May 2009

Anonymeye - The Disambiguation Of Anonymeye (Sound & Fury)

Named in honour of John Fahey, Mariah Carey, Wikipedia or all three, 'The Disambiguation of Anonymeye' is the second full-length album from Brisbane experimental artist Andrew Tuttle .
Inspired by the cities of Brisbane, Melbourne and Rotterdam, relocations, micronations, airports and new beginnings, 'The Disambiguation...' is a combination of layered compositions and edited improvisations, which sees Anonymeye adding a variety of vintage synthesisers to his signature blend of delicately fingerpicked bluegrass.
With electronics from the ARP, Putney, Korg and Roland stables complimenting steel string guitar motifs, minimalist, punishing signal processing and electro-acoustic work, 'The Disambiguation Of Anonymeye' is simply startling in breadth and utterly immersive in depth...
...and also features contributions by Cameron Webb of Seaworthy

Seaworthy - 1897 (12K)

'1897' is the second full length album from Australian soundscapists Seaworthy. In the winter of 2007, recordings were made in and around a 100 year old decommissioned ammunitions bunker and, unlike the warm pastoral sounds of previous releases, '1897' is a starker, more melancholic album.
With greater emphasis on minimalism in their improvisation and composition of guitar, electronics and field recordings, '1897' reflects the emptiness of the bunker and the eerie quiet that so often descends on the natural world within the depths of winter.
Along with looped guitar and electronics, field recordings played back within the sandstone bunkers were also recorded, using the natural reverb of the large rooms as a way of processing the sounds of birds, insects and wind through trees. Over 6 hours of recordings resulted and took most of 2008 to process and assemble. In addition, with the arrival of Cameron's first child, mixing was a long, drawn out process and completed under the haze of sleep deprivation.

Yousei - Three Daydream (self released)
Yousei Suzuki out of Japan, has been a regular and favourite of Sideways Through Sound since the astonishing first album 'Echo On Black Tile' (also self released) was kindly sent over here and subsequently featured on the show.
'Three Daydream' is Yousei's second full length release and this talented musician continues to display his admiration for American Primitive luminaries such as John Fahey and Peter Lang, but continues to lean increasingly towards the Eastern flavoured attack and improvisation of the late, great Robbie Basho.
The style however is very much his own; with a hint of Mississippi Blues, avant-garde guitar abuse, jazz influenced time signatures and experimental electronics, 'Three Daydream' is a captivating and thrilling DIY adventure in six string possibility and potential...
...and as Yousei tells us, "I tape it in a bathroom."

Featured: Spotlight on Sensory Projects Records
(or "Welcome to your new favourite label, Part 9 ")

Based in Melbourne, Sensory Projects started out as the home of ‘Sadness Is In The Sky’, a music ‘zine focused on leftfield and (primarily) independent music culture. A long-time fascination with record labels like Spunk!, Drag City, Thrill Jockey, Warp and Leaf and, encouraged by the offer of a distribution deal, found Sensory Projects dipping its toes into a new world.
Sensory Projects Records began in 2000 and the first release (Kammerflimmer Kollektief) came in March 2001. Since then the label has worked with a diverse roster of artists including The Tigers, Disaster Plan, The Rectifiers, International Karate, MONO, and The Sand Pebbles, as well the likes of Pivot, Damien Jurado, Mirah and Shearwater.
Recent releases from Canon Blue, Panoptique Electrical, Children Of The Wave, The Declining Winter, The Sun Blindness, and in 2009 Mum Smokes prove that “Sensory Projects, is a label that has consistently surprised and delighted the ears, by digging up and bringing to us some of the most incredible music that you would never otherwise hear.” INPRESS magazine.
Sideways Through Sound will be playing a selection of aural treats from the Sensory Projects back catalogue on next weeks show, 13th may 2009

Featured: Marissa Nadler - Little Hells (Kemado)

Whilst maintaining her trademark ethereal style, Marissa's new album 'Little Hells' competently builds upon the medieval soundscapes of her previous work. Even with the welcome addition of several more instrumentally involved tracks, the effect remains subtle enough to preserve the haunting elegance that seduced us all in the first place.
'Little Hells' is delicately acoustic, soaked in reverb and beautifully subdued. Marissa's subtly commanding vocals are often delivered with ghostly melancholy, almost on the verge of tears. The subject matter remains emotionally charged; lost love, murder and madness, emotional death and rebirth, all themes that Marissa has explored before, yet she still manages to sound convincingly vital.
Though 'Little Hells' continues utilizing the aspects that made her previous releases so memorable, the solid songwriting and the additional musicians makes Marissa's fourth album a release of pure beauty, that surpasses the material of all of her previous releases.
Sideways Through Sound will be featuring 'Little Hells' next week, 6th May 2009
