Luluc - Dear Hamlyn
Some time ago Sideways Through Sound received a plain-wrapped and intriguing cdr from Melbourne's Luluc (pronounced Lou-Luke). That one track of smokey bar-room folk-noir (Little Suitcase) is now comfortably nestled in their brand new long player, 'Dear Hamlyn'.
Luluc's debut album at first seems gorgeously simple, but soon reveals profound depths. Written and recorded over more than two years in the converted attic of an old Fitzroy mansion, the album is the sound of music pared down to an essential core.
'Dear Hamlyn' presents the songwriting of singer/guitarist Zoë Randell. Avoiding melodrama or vocal histrionics Zoë’s rich, low voice is strikingly beautiful and, paired with her reflective songs, it becomes a revelation. Along with Steve Hassett’s fine-tuned supporting ear, Luluc achieve an austere beauty via pre- electric means favouring the rich, natural tones of antique acoustic guitars, close harmonies, and un-amplified instruments.
Filled with images of departure and sadness, but also with hope for better times ahead, 'Dear Hamlyn' is remarkable in its restraint and emotional purity. These stories reflect the struggle to find a place to call home, the challenges of overcoming isolation, and the impact of losing someone close to you.
Sideways Through Sound will feature 'Dear Hamlyn' on next weeks show 04/08/2008

Luluc / Jordie Lane / And Then To Bed
Luluc will be launching their album 'Dear Hamlyn' at The Vanguard on 14th August. In the absence of a poster from the headliners, the excellent Jordie Lane (supporting) sent over this one for us. Another date in your diary...

Tom Carter & Christian Kiefer - From The Great American Songbook

The second collaborative work between Tom Carter and Christian Kiefer is an expansive and ambitious recasting of traditional American music. With their interpretations, they have taken the songs that have seeped into their souls and extended upon them, creating something entirely personal despite the strength of the source material. This makes From The Great American Songbook a true hallmark of American music invention.
Carter and Kiefer have taken the spirit of songs such as Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues and Railroad Boy as a starting point for their spectral guitar improvisations, then fleshed them out with piano, percussion, bass and drums.
Within this thrillingly vast sonic terrain are moments of foreboding, tenderness, melancholy and gut-wrenching rawness. As a result Sideways Through Sound is left with no option and will be featuring From The Great American Songbook on next week's show, 28th July 2008.
http://www.preservation.com.au
Preservation is a label from Sydney, Australia, releasing sweet and exploratory sounds from across the music spectrum around the world.
With albums from experimentalists Chris Townend and Oren Ambarchi (Sunn), an overview of Australian experimental, electronica and sound-art (Motion: Movement in Australian Sound), ambient folk from Tara Jane O'Neil from Kentucky, the post-rock atmospherics of Saddleback from northern NSW, experimental 12-string guitar from Germany's Steffen Basho-Junghans, and acid-tinged folk from Sideways Through Sound favoutites Eddie Marcon out of Japan.
All this plus the pure songwriting genius of Grand Salvo and the expansive electronica from Post (both out of Melbourne), noises from the multi-instrumentalist Aaron Martin, projects featuring Charalambides' Tom Carter, and the exquisite acoustic ruminations of Scotland's Early Songs.
They also love making the look of their CD's that little bit special.... all of their unique packaging is hand-crafted and designed in-house by Mark Gowing.

Arborea - S/T (Fire Museum)
Combining the common emotional thread running through ancient British murder ballads and the more evocative music found deep in the Appalachian Mountains, Maine folk duo Arborea creates timeless music, haunted by deep shadows.
Named after a species of trees, Arborea comprises Buck Curran on acoustic, slide, and electric guitars, flutes, banjo, and vocals, along with Shanti Curran, who sings lead and plays banjo, percussion, guitar, bowed strings, and ukulele. Their songs are bathed in shimmering harmonics, spectral slide, and positively spooky banjo.
Arborea evoke a kind of mysterious quality, where you are never quite sure what the songs are about, but they seem to touch a place in your soul that instinctively understands.
After their last album 'Wayfaring Summer' received fairly heavy attention on Sideways Through Sound, Thee Sonic Assassin is very happy to announce that the new album from Arborea will be featured on the show 21/07/2008

Jeff Eden - Night & Day Songs For Solo Guitar

Thee Sonic Assassin was recently asked to distill the Sideways Through Sound experience into a half dozen words. When the whole premise of the show is built on a "vibe" this seemingly simple request proved to be a rather tricky undertaking. But the foundation of this "vibe" has once again been re-inforced by the arrival of Jeff Eden's CD 'Night & Day Songs For Solo Guitar'.
In a world constantly striving for marketable product dictated by a twisted media image of perceived perfection, rather than art based on talent, honesty and integrity, the words "no overdubs" on the cover of Jeff's album spoke volumes even before first listen.
At 24 years old, this remarkably talented young man from Baltimore, Maryland (currently living in Chicago) has created one of the most mesmerising and intriguing solo acoustic guitar records so far this year.
Sidways Through Sound are truly honoured to have Jeff Eden as our featured album on next weeks show: 14th July 2008. Miss it or miss out brothers and sisters!!
And there are no overdubs!!

I Am Your Autopilot - Robots In The Orchestra

Given that the turntables in Studio 2 are a short, frantic dash from the panel, Thee Sonic Assassin has decided that the move to vinyl on the Sideways Through Sound playlists will have to wait... So that means that the wonderful I Am Your Autopilot will be the record of the week 7/7/8
I Am Your Autopilot rediscovered themselves in 2006 having been lost for some time. Ben and Graeme were writing partners for a number of years in "The Italian Love Party" who recorded for Factory Too - Tony Wilson's valiant attempt to keep Factory going after being bought out by London Records.
When the band split, Ben and Graeme embarked on a number of different art projects. One of these projects brought Ben and Jasper together. At the end of 2005, Ben and Graeme took tentative steps towards restarting the writing partnership along with Jasper. The resulting "Smokescreens" and "All in Our Hands" were released on the Timbreland compilation showcasing emerging artists from a range of different styles from folk to electronica. I Am Your Autopilot have just finished their debut album "Robots in the Orchestra" and Sideways Through Sound are 'buzzing, bzzz, pop, click, fzzzt' to have them as our featured artist this week.
