v/a Migrating Bird. The Music Of Lal Waterson (Honest Jon's)

Lal Waterson is hardly the best known of folk singers, but over time her work has proved increasingly influential. Starting out in the early 1960s with her siblings Norma and Mike as the Watersons they proceeded to create some of the most influential folk records of the era. Certainly setting a precedent for the likes of Fairport Convention, their best was yet to come.
They disbanded in the late 60's, but reformed in 1972 and produced a recording that would re-define the entire scene. 'Bright Phoebus' featured a host of now legendary names; Richard Thompson, Maddy Prior, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy and more. This compilation is a celebration of Lal Waterson's influential career and fittingly takes cult names from the new wave of British folk music, as well as dropping in a couple of classics.
With James Yorkston, King Creosote, The Memory Band, Alasdair Roberts, and Sideways Through Sound favourite Nancy Elizabeth all putting their unique spin on Lal's haunting songs, each one remarkably manages to take them to another place altogether. By the time the album comes to a close with Vashti Bunyan's cover of 'Migrating Bird', there's no doubt that Lal Waterson was a serious talent and will at last be rediscovered by a host of new listeners.
Migrating Bird will be Sideways Through Sound's featured album on 24/01/2008

Jozef Van Wissem

This week Sideways Through Sound will feature the incredible new album from Jozef Van Wissem, 'Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear'.
Van Wissem probably plays and composes for the most unlikely instruments in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance and Baroque lute. He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free improv of the silent type. Although Van Wissem uses subtle electronic sound manipulation, he has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute.
Van Wissem also runs the Incunabulum label, and performs regularly around the world in duo with guitar-wizard of Captain Beefheart-fame, Gary Lucas. He also works with M.B. / Maurizio Bianchi., Tetuzi Akiyama and Elliot Sharp.

Owls Of The Swamp

Following whispered rumours and much speculation, there has finally been a confirmation of shows here in Sydney by Sideways Through Sound favourite Owls Of The Swamp. Initially we planned a tie-in for Pete to come and play on the show, but sadly this has to be post-poned.
The good news is that the show will now be at Madame Fling Flong's in Newtown, 22nd of January.

Heidi Elva
The lovely Heidi Elva very kindly gave Sideways Through Sound a taste of things to come this week, with a four track CD from her forthcoming album. If you weren't lucky enough to hear 'There's A Spell' on last night's show then you should go to The Hopetoun to see Heidi play on the 25th of January, for a night of sonically breathtaking beauty.

River Crombie - S/T
The astonishing River Crombie from Melbourne takes record of the week on the show this week. Here's what River has to say about himself:

I am a singer/songwriter. My songs are inspired by the folk tradition. My guitar style is influenced by the English folk and blues guitarists of the 1960's such as John Martyn, Davey Graham, and John Renbourn. I am also inspired by the music of Paul Simon and many others who have helped me along the way. Lyrically, whatever falls onto the page is what usually stays. I write the songs to stand alone - to remain in the original form of how they came to me; one guitar and a voice. I released an eponymous debut album recorded by Aaron Cupples in an old hall in Gippsland, Victoria in winter 2007.

Tunng

Sideways Through Sound regulars and favourites Tunng, are heading to Australia for their live debut in January 2008. Thee Sonic Assassin has already had the pleasure of seeing them live and will be urging them to bring along their splendid outfits of foliage.
Do yourself a favour and see them at:
13th, 14th and 15th January
Sydney Festival (Spiegeltent)
16th January
Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
Chris Corsano

Sideways Through Sound's favourite free-jazz percussion worrying demon is on his way to Australia. Chris will be here with Bjork, playing both the Big Day Out and the Opera House.
What this man can do with a beat-up old kit, pots and pans, sticky tape and a shower hose defies belief. This is absolute artistic expressionism at its most pure, from one of the most inventive improvisers playing today.
Chris has been on the show both as a solo artist and also accompanying Six Organs Of Admittance Ben Chasney.
