Ben (Epok) and Sadie (Eidas Mai) come from a musical family of 60's folk singers, who passed on their love of music to their children. Inspired to learn an instrument, Ben begged his parents for years until they finally gave in and bought him a piano and lessons, much to his Father's disgust who wanted him to learn the guitar (which ironically he did some 10 years later!)

Ben's musical life changed forever upon hearing Nick Drakes 'Five Leaves Left' and hasn't really played a keyboard since!. Writing songs on an acoustic guitar, he built a loft studio and set about finding his new sound. Ben says "when I say studio it was a four track tape recorder! As well as tape hiss, the boiler was in the loft and had a mantra-like hum which would also be picked up. I liked it though, it gave the songs character..."

It was around this time that Ben asked his sister Sadie to sing with him. They were both working through some deep personal issues, their therapy was to get stoned, record, and during the night's laughter and tears, Epok and Eidas Mai were born...

Following a 7" on Sideways Through Sound favourites, the Great Pop Supplement label, they started getting gigs and decided to combine all their songs as Sweet Williams. ('Williams' is their Mother's maiden name).

Sideways Through Sound are very excited to be featuring Sweet Williams on next week's show 28th January.

Elizabeth Devlin has travelled the world to invoke influences from scratchy American and French phonographs to combine these with her bitter-sweet, haunting vocals and angelic, cacophonous Autoharp melodies.

Her performance art began initially as lyrical, melodic, acapella poetry, but soon blossomed into an eclectic, electro-acoustic sound when she began to play the autoharp.

Elizabeth's intention with 'All Are Relative' was to compose a delicious residual hum of dreams and fantastic things and, although the individual tracks display a wide range of genre associations, they were conceived as symbiotic pieces intertwined, parts of a dynamic storybook, an audible cerebral landscape.

Sideways Through Sound will be playing a selection from 'All Are Relative' on next week's show 21st January 2009...

Manchester's The Travelling Band take their influence from a variety of styles, folk, county and psyche rock before filtering it through their own sunshine-pop sensibility.

On their recently released debut album, Under The Pavement, rarely has a British band of recent times sounded this fresh and timeless. The Travelling band excel at sounding happy, sad, frustrated, and vulnerable, often at the same time, and their songs, whether fast or slow, are simply bursting with energy and wisdom.

Thee Sonic Assassin will be featuring their cosmic Mancunian Americana on 14th January 2009.

Spotlight on Little Somebody Records

(or "Welcome to your new favourite label, Part 6 ")

Welcome to the family!

With no sign of letting up, the 'spotlight' series continues into the New Year as the first show of 2009 is given to the new/pagan folk sounds of the superb Little Somebody Records out of Washington DC.

Little Somebody Records is an independent label interested in psych-folk music and its surrounding sounds. Specializing mostly in limited hand-made releases, the primary focus is on building a family of wonderful and creative artists.

The small roster so far includes The Joy Of Nature's lush, ambient folk landscapes, Cloud Temple’s surreal, yet earthy journeys into far-out psych-folk realms, A. Lixivia's blend of medieval and contemporary folk, Green Mistletoe's brooding voice and gentle shimmering melodies and the haunting forest-folk styles of Arrowwood and Novemtree (spearheaded by label boss Pythagumus).

Every release is limited and comes wrapped in beautifully unique packaging, making each one something of a treasured collectors item, and, with releases by Birch Book/In Gowan Ring, The Boy Who Spoke Clouds, Moongazing Hare, Deviltry and Rebsie Fairholm planned in the New Year this is just the beginning for this wonderful label!!

Thee Sonic Assassin will be playing a selection from the Little Somebody Records back catalogue on the show 5th January 2009.
