Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (Rogue)

Bon Iver

Justin Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood-splitting and chores around the land. Justin's seclusion slowly manifested into long recording sessions, punctuated with trips on the tractor to collect firewood. All of his deepest troubles were suddenly purged into song, resulting in this hauntingly profound album. "For Emma, Forever Ago" is filled with thick layers draped in lush choral walls, with rarely more than an ancient acoustic guitar or the occasional bass drum providing structure.

This is the sound of a man left alone with his memories and a guitar and , as as Justin says "It wasn't planned, the goal was to hibernate"

Bon Iver will be the featured album on Sideways Through Sound 06/03/2008

Rusalnaia - S/T (Camera Obscura)

Rus

On next weeks show (28/02), our featured album will be the brand new Rusalnaia CD, out now on the superb Camera Obscura label.

This new psych-folk collaboration between Sideways Through Sound's favourite dark folk troubadour Sharron Kraus and Ex-Reverie member Gillian Chadwick, is comprised of eight songs influenced in greater or lesser part by Mellow Candle, Trees and Jefferson Airplane and coming out like "gypsies in Bohemia, smoking opium and drinking ginger tea". Luminously Pagan: a soundtrack to Bergman's "The Virgin Spring" rather than "The Wicker Man".

Could almost be purpous built for the Sideways Through Sound listening experience...

Sideways Through Sound's "new favourite label"

LSR

A parcel arrived this week from the lovely folks at Little Somebody Records in Washington. They are a new independent label interested in psych-folk music and its surrounding sounds. Specializing mostly in limited hand-made releases, the primary focus is on building a family of wonderful and creative artists.

The roster so far includes releases from Arrowwood, The Joy Of Nature, Leodsong Guild, Novemthree, Cloud Temple, A. Lixivia and Green Mistletoe.

Tom Woodward

Tom's new album Broken Heart Hustle (working title), is due for release in mid 2008. It will take him down a similar path to that of his finger picking bluegrass heroes; the rustic twang of Jerry Garcia and the archaic vocal of Tim Hardin.

Desire (b/w The Third Wheel played on Sideways Through Sound last night 14/2/08) is the first single from the forthcoming album. Taking a departure from the doom-laden melancholy of Tom's first album, Blue Day Requiem, and featuring his superb finger-picking skills, Tom's new recordings display a less pessimistic outlook on life. Desire is a celebratory song about the naïve and simplistic function of sexual attraction and The Third Wheel is about a guy who doesn’t want to sit on the outskirts anymore.

Tom will be here in Sydney on the first of March, for more information go to:

The obsession continues, Thee Sonic Assassin just found a clip for the Hawkwind 1973 classic Urban Guerilla. Originally banned as considered way too inflammatory in the political climate of the day, and now...

No More Censorship!!!
