Featured: Sean Smith - Eternal (Gnome Life)

Sideways Through Sound regular and favourite Sean Smith is a modern composer of finger picked, folk guitar. Since January 2005 and his debut album for Isota Records, Berkeley resident and guitarist, composer, improvisor, Sean Smith has put his time in playing relentlessly in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Sean has recently been drawn out of his hermetic recording life by the power and potential of collaboration. In the company of his friends, one voice becomes many: 6-string steel, Weissenborn and nylon-string guitars, with dulcimer, banjo, violin, organ, drums creating an electric wall of sound. His guitar breathes deeply in this new depth of field and altered sonic state, giving bright light and love to his powerfully emotive instrumental songs.
'Eternal' is a pure analog recording, recorded and mixed to 2 inch reel-to-reel tape, and mastered directly from tape to vinyl. The new album comprises the efforts of Smith with Spencer Owen, Adam Snider, Fletcher Tucker, and Angela Hsu and is available on vinyl (limited to 300, with letter pressed sleeves) through Gnome Life and also on CD by Ultra Hard Gel.
Returning from a recent tour of Iceland, Sweden, and Spain, Smith is back stateside planning his next onslaught of wordless gospel. Sideways Through Sound will be faeturing 'Eternal' on next weeks show 22nd December 2008.

Featured: Fovea Hex - Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent (Diestadtmusik / Janet)

Fovea Hex is folk legend Clodagh Simonds (Mellow Candle) with Colin Potter, Hugh O'Neil, Percy Jones,, Roger Doyle, Roger and Brian Eno, Andrew McKenzie, Robert Fripp and a whole bunch of other folks...you get the idea...
This collection of such astonishing talent has, perhaps unsurprisingly, created the most extraordinarily haunting and majestic music. Originally released over 3 limited edition EP's 'Bloom', 'Huge' and 'Allure' they have now been collated as a beautiful box set called 'Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent'.
In a world full to over-flowing with folk pretenders, Clodagh Simonds has the kind of clear pure voice that makes you hold your breath in wonder. With such beauty at her command she could quite easily play it safe; luckily, she's got other plans.
The starlit nocturnes of Fovea Hex bind electronics, drones and voices into song-spells that are untimely in the best possible sense: their intimacy and raw emotional power feel centuries old but the experimental sound design can be shockingly modern.
Sideways Through Sound will be featuring the 'Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent' on next week's show, 15th December 2008.

Station ID's
Do Not Panic
Thee Sonic Assassin has recently been building up a library of station ID's from some of the folks who have been played on the show. Upon hearing that there was going to be a Hawkwind-related special show, Roman from Sone Institute sent through a bunch of mind-bending stings to be played on the night.
Using Hawkwind samples and lots of studio trickery, Roman created a number of darkly psychedelic soundscapes especially for Sideways Through Sound. The stings will continue to be played (with or without Hawkwind in the playlist) but Thee Sonic Assassin would like to extend the warmest gratitude to Roman for supporting the show.
Sone Institute - Silver Leaves & Wooly Dreams

Sone Institute is the work of Roman Bezdyk. The music is created using electronics, sampling, classroom percussion, circuit bent and stringed instruments. Inspired by the mysterious and beautiful qualities of nature, chance encounters and found sounds. Music for pleasure records, magnetic tape recordings, surrealism, cinema, theatre and spoken word. Evoking feelings of distant dreams and memories, folklore, fantasy, escape and unconscious landscapes is the intention of the music.
A limited edition of 60 hand made copies,'Silver Leaves and Woolly Dreams' is available for only 99p (in the spirit of Cherry Red Records / Pillows and Prayers) contact Roman at:

Featured: Trensmat / Sonic Attack 3 x 7"s
Spotlight on Trensmat Records / The Sonic Attack Trilogy
(or "Welcome to your new favourite label, Part 5 ")

Trensmat Records are determined to challenge you. In a world increasingly content with pre-packaged, safely sanitised product, Trensmat will warmly sooth, irritate, confound and caress all your senses at once.
With a back catalogue of beautifully presented 7" records from a variety of experimental noise makers, shoe-gazers, space rockers and general neighbour botherers, like The Telescopes, Heavy Winged, Area C and the Astral Social Club, this is another label perfectly aligned with Sideways Through Sound...
...and regular listeners to the show will already be familiar with Thee Sonic Assassin's obsession with the original psychedelic warlords, the mighty Hawkwind.
Like all the best obsessions this one is fully wide-eyed, completely lacking reason and liable to keep you awake at night. So next week think only of yourself and be prepared for the inevitable climax, where these hot, acid fried interpretations are given time, space and love to do their thing...
From the realms beyond the sun, Sideways Through Sound has no choice but to make The Sonic Attack Trilogy our feature on 8th December 2008.

Featured: The Driftwood Manor
The Driftwood Manor were formed in Ballymahon/ Athlone/Goldsmith Country Ireland, in March 2007. Originally conceived as a collaboration between Eddie Keenan and Dave Colohan, the band quickly developed into a multi-instrumental outfit.
Drawing on the talents of a collective of local musicians and influences, The Driftwood Manor soon developed their magical blend of Irish traditional music, psyche folk and alternative rock.
Thee Sonic Assassin first entered the world of The Driftwood Manor early in 2008, when Eddie very kindly sent a couple of EP's to Sideways Through Sound. Hastlily packaged on tour, they arrived carefully wrapped in string with hand-written covers (easily the next best thing to a 7" record!) and the connection was immediate.
With a mesmerising concoction of folk flavoured story-telling, some mean use of traditional instruments and the occasional hit of heavy psyche-out distortion, The Driftwood Manor felt almost tailor-made for Sideways Through Sound.
And when the first official Driftwood Manor release 'A Gathering' arrived last week (that's not the cover up there either , the jpeg is in San Francisco!!) , there was no question that it would be the featured album on next week's show, 1st December 2008.
To The Driftwood Manor, welcome home!!
