Featured: Tan Or Boil - Seamstress In A Suitcase (Preservation)

Tan Or Boil is the alias of Pittsburgh-born Jason Bacasa, who left his home town for travels which took him to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago. With just an acoustic guitar and 4-track recorder as part of his luggage he would write and record spontaneously, piecing the various fragments into song when settled for longer periods.
As a result Jason's songs often have a surreal fervour running through them, alongside the hushed intimacy that inevitably comes from late-night recording in apartment buildings.
While currently based in New York, Jason was keen to extend on the bare-bones acoustic style of his songs. Working with fellow Preservation artist Aaron Martin, the songs slowly expanded to the realms of both the baroque and the exotic, and even get beat-driven courtesy of Melbourne-based electronic artist Part Timer.
Even so, a raw and strange beauty still exists at the core of Seamstress in a Suitcase, where it's kaleidoscopically imaginative spin now enhances that feeling as well as taking it somewhere else entirely.
Sideways Through Sound will feature Tan Or Boil's 'Seamstress In A Suitcase' on next weeks show 25th August 2008.

Featured: Helena Espvall & Masaki Batoh - S/T

The featured album on next week's show is the collaboration between Swedish-born multi-instrumentalist Helena Espvall (Espers) and Japanese legend Masaki Batoh (Ghost).
For instruments fans, this session (held in Tokyo over four days in December, 2007) should be a treasure. The list includes: 6 and 12 string guitar, banjo, cello, hurdy-gurdy, harp, contra bass, chappa Tibetan bells, Kin (Buddhist metallic bowl), timpani, bass marimba, vibraphone, thunder sheet and on and on...
For the album, Swedish and European traditional folk songs were reconstructed, along with Masaki's superb arrangement of 'Death Letter', the classic Son House delta blues tune. He also delivers a re-construction of 'Zeranium', a dreamy folk tune Batoh originally wrote for Damon & Naomi.
Given Espvall's occasional, musically abrasive form, and Batoh's penchant for experimental, often atonal, improvisation, it might have been expected that the sounds resulting from the pair might strip paint at a 100 paces. Instead they've come up with something beautifully fragile, remarkably melodic and enticingly charming.

Featured: The Great Pop Supplement Records
Spotlight on The Great Pop Supplement
(or "Welcome to your new favourite label, Part 1")

Ever since getting hold of the Box Deluxe 3"CD sometime last year, Thee Sonic Assassin has been completely captivated (read 'obsessed') by this vinyl only label (ok they have put out 2 CD's but sshhhh!!) who specialise primarily in 7" wax and occasional laithe cuts, more often than not packaged in lovingly crafted hand made sleeves.
So given there was a bit of a back-log in the GPS "to be played (again)" pile, the time was absolutely now for Sideways Through Sound to dedicate a show to one of the most adventurous and creative labels around today.
The Great Pop Supplement tick all the right boxes for lovers of psychefolkfuzzpopdronegarage sounds, with a double whammy of a high quality back-catalogue that includes Jack Rose, Tunng, Wooden Wand, MV & EE and Voice Of The Seven Woods, re-enforced with coloured vinyl pressings (just try and deny you don't love it!!) that finally come wrapped and packed in sleeves that use enough imaginative textures and cut-outs to make every release absolutely essential.
Thee Sonic Assassin will be sharing his obsession with this true leading light of a label on Sideways Through Sound 11th August 2008

Featured: Luluc - Dear Hamlyn
Some time ago Sideways Through Sound received a plain-wrapped and intriguing cdr from Melbourne's Luluc (pronounced Lou-Luke). That one track of smokey bar-room folk-noir (Little Suitcase) is now comfortably nestled in their brand new long player, 'Dear Hamlyn'.
Luluc's debut album at first seems gorgeously simple, but soon reveals profound depths. Written and recorded over more than two years in the converted attic of an old Fitzroy mansion, the album is the sound of music pared down to an essential core.
'Dear Hamlyn' presents the songwriting of singer/guitarist Zoë Randell. Avoiding melodrama or vocal histrionics Zoë’s rich, low voice is strikingly beautiful and, paired with her reflective songs, it becomes a revelation. Along with Steve Hassett’s fine-tuned supporting ear, Luluc achieve an austere beauty via pre- electric means favouring the rich, natural tones of antique acoustic guitars, close harmonies, and un-amplified instruments.
Filled with images of departure and sadness, but also with hope for better times ahead, 'Dear Hamlyn' is remarkable in its restraint and emotional purity. These stories reflect the struggle to find a place to call home, the challenges of overcoming isolation, and the impact of losing someone close to you.
Sideways Through Sound will feature 'Dear Hamlyn' on next weeks show 04/08/2008
