Slow - Seeds (Old Crow Music)

The new album by Slow arrived this week and became an instant hit with Thee Sonic Assassin, measures of acoustic flavoured folk, fuzzy downtempo shoegaze and a sombre forboding make it just about perfect Sideways Through Sound Material and will be our featured album next week (01/05/08)...
Slow - Sideways Through Sound loves you!!
Review from Sonic Sanctuary Sunday, March 16, 2008
"An optimistic Mark Kozelek could be a good comparison for the main voice of Slow, and the carefully measured music that glints behind them has a sure softness of touch that borders on perfection. Loose bass plucking, wavering e-bow slivers, unhurried percussion and ghostly female vox/harmonium interlock around lightly reverbed vocals, which seem to be leaking from somewhere else. Their music is pristine and dare I say it faultless – a gentleness best appreciated through closed eyes"
Also stand by for brand new music from Harvey Lord, ARP, Wil Cope, Sugar Mountain Mama Serenade, Guy Gelem, Soon Clyde, Jon Woode, The Voices, The Wylde Olde Souls, Lisa Piu and much, much, much more...

With so much great music arriving each week, the featured record slot is becoming a tough choice. But the next two weeks have been decided; Sideways Through Sound 24/04 will focus on the incredible 'surreal cinema for the ears' of Salome Dupree:

Sonic News... is back.... 10/04/2008
History...
Conspicuous by it's absence but not that there's been no news recently, but a combination of sickness and computer challenges had put Thee Sonic Assassin out of action for a couple of weeks...
But we are back!! There's a lot, so pour yourself another glass and get comfy...
New Time New Sting
At the top of this page you will see a new addition. Click on the Sideways Through Sound musical note to hear the dulcet Northern tones of Thee Sonic Assassin... "from deep within the corridors..." etc etc
Also a quick recap to mention that on Sideways Through Sound over the last couple of shows we've had some outstanding musical guests, including; The Hazelman Brothers, Arrowwood, Brethren Of The Free Spirit, Whysp, Young Werther, The See See, Birds & Batteries and Thirty Pounds Of Bone.
Thee Sonic Assassin thanks you all...
And the bar has been set extremely high as usual by the incredible folks who have been under the bleary-eyed gaze of the featured album spot. On 27/03 we heard a selection of tracks from the exquisite 'Blue' from the guitar genius of Yokahama's Kaya Ogawa and last week, 3/04, we were in the truly wonderful company of the 'toy shop jazz and bicycle repair-kit funk folk' masterpiece that is 'Three' from the UK's Junkboy.

Lionshare - From The Ground (Palimpsest Recordings)

This week, 10/04, we turn the spotlight on Lionshare and their brand new debut album 'From The Ground'. Lionshare have been a staple of the Cambridge (UK) underground scene for some time and have finally produced a fully realised album.
Recorded in the 'live in a room' tradition with vintage equipment straight to eight track tape, the recording has captured a flavour reminiscent of the classic Joe Boyd productions of the '60s (co-incidentally Joe also recorded 'Three Hours' from the Nick Drake album Five Leaves Left which will be featured on the same show).
'From The Ground' is more song based than previous material and live performances and there's a distinct pastoral Cambridge sound on this recording. Songs have been developed around finger picked acoustic guitar with flourishes of cello, organ and electric guitar, alongside the terang, singing bowl and board zither. While at times the 'From The Ground' sounds steeped in the British Isles, on occasion the songs open amidst drones and improvisations for excursions far beyond those shores.
Anniversary show, it looks like a Manchester special...??!!??
Purely by accident (honest), looking over the playlist, it seems that next weeks show has developed a definate Mancunian vibe, but given that we are on the verge of our first birthday here at Sideways Through Sound, please allow me to indulge myself...
John Fairhurst - Joys Of Spring (Humble Soul)

Our featured album 17/04 will be by the incredible John Fairhurst. John has been playing guitar most of his life, sometimes he sings, but this is a recent development. He also likes to plug his guitar into big loud amplifiers and make as much noise as he can. His Dad got him into slide blues when he was young and K.Sridhar opened his ears to Indian Classical music when he was about 8.
For the last few years he aimlessly wandered far flung parts of this great globe, playing music and getting into trouble.
John recorded most of his album 'Joys Of Spring' in a shed with his friends in the beautiful countryside surrounding his delightful hometown of Wigan.
John will be more than competently accompanied by fellow Mancunians on the show 17/04, Nancy Elizabeth, Denis Jones, Butler-Williams, Dan Melrose, Aidan Smith AND David A Jaycock...

Australian folks do get a look-in too...
Thee Sonic Assassin likes to eat strange berries, paint himself blue and run naked in the woods at Solstice with:
Heidi Elva, Owls Of the Swamp, Ichabod's Crane, River Crombie, The Frightening Lights, Anonymeye, Brothers Of The Occult Sisterhood, Khancoban, Tiger & Me, Shiver Like Timber, Mousetrapreplica, Tim Ireland, The Boy Who Spoke Clouds, Nick & Liesl, Kissy Trouble Company, Rob McDade, Young Werther, Luluc, Carry Nation, Breath Koresh, Night Radio, Jona Byron, Dust, The Hazelman Brothers, Jilted Brides, Rory Faithfield, Aqualash, Seaworthy, Derwent River Star, Modern Gong Ritual, Handasyd Williams, Tiger Panic, Friends Of Man, Major Chord, The Orbweavers, Mark Wilkinson, Tom Woodward, The Boats, Eva Popov... to be continued...
Huge thanks and eternal gratitude to everyone who has supported Sideways Through Sound over the last 12months...
Sideways Through Sound exists because of your love brothers and sisters!!
